Boring Predictions? Nah. 2024's Social Shake-Up 🔮✨

Published 4 months ago • 4 min read

Hi Reader,

Yesterday morning, I did something bold!

I tossed out the first version of this newsletter, the one I had all set to fire off to your inbox. For someone who thrives on structure, it was like tackling Everest without climbing gear.

Why, you ask? Here's the thing: The original message just wasn't good enough. It didn't deliver the value you deserve. And time? It's your most precious gem, my friend💎

So, I didn't hesitate. I rolled up my sleeves, hit the reset button, and conjured something better (I hope ;o)).

As we boldly venture into 2024, my mission is crystal clear: laser-focused, top-tier value, and a more authentic human connection.

Get ready for the real me 😅

Strategy spotlight this week

As the new year kicks off, we're flooded with trends, ideas, and "expert" opinions. It's overwhelming. But amidst all that noise, one article stands out: Jack's 2024 Social Media Predictions

Points that jumped off the page to me:

• Threads isn’t going to be a thing

"Meta caught the hail mary, but fumbled on the one-yard line. They got the users there, but didn’t leave anything sticky to keep people around."

My take: I gave Threads a shot over Christmas, posted a few times, but haven't revisited it. I was flooded with notifications of new followers (WTF), prompting me to swiftly disable those notifications. Since then, I haven't bothered to check back. Makes me think that Jack might be onto something! 🤔

Live content finally dies

"Remember when every brand tried Instagram Live during quarantine? ...It’s never worked for brands because who on earth is excited to watch an @brand make live content. Leave lives to Twitch streamers and creators who have a human connection with their audience."

My take: All those hesitations, introductions, and um's and ah's at the beginning of a live stream? Nah, not my cup of tea. I've often bounced out before they even reach the main event, assuming they ever do!

• YouTube Shorts becomes a key channel for brand social teams

"Those Reels & TikToks you’re making can go right up on YouTube Shorts, bringing more attention to that channel that’s only hosted your TV spots the last few years. Watch Shorts become quite effective in driving brand awareness without much customization time from brand teams."

My take: YouTube has vast reach and engagement potential, particularly among younger audiences. YouTube Shorts plays a huge role in complementing existing marketing efforts and driving traffic to a brand's website or landing pages. Repurposing short-form video content across YouTube is a no-brainer.

• Watch time becomes a primary metric.

"We know we can’t win in 2024 social without video content, but we haven’t really adjusted our analytics for that shift. Rather than reporting likes and comments front and center, watch for watch time to be the new proof of engaged audiences. Anyone can double tap a heart—but can you get viewers to stick around a full minute?"

My take: Watch time is a potent tool, especially for things like retargeting in ads. If a user watches a video, tailor their next ad based on its length. This is definitely a trend worth keeping an eye on.

Bigger social budgets as senior social pros move into marketing leadership

"McDonald’s just promoted Social Media Director Guillaume Huin to Senior Director of Marketing in the most high profile instance of social to general marketing yet. Now that we’re 10-15 years into professional social being a big thing, watch for those promotions to trigger double downs on social because, well, that’s where they came from."

My take: Cheers to this! Social media (done right) is, in my humble opinion, one of the most underrated professions out there. Bring on those promotions! 🚀

• Social Media Managers will struggle to find promotions.

"This one actually keeps me up at night. There are far more junior and midlevel SMMs than there are Director of Social gigs, and that jack-of-all-trades might feel more master-of-none in the modern job market. I highly suggest all SMMs begin sharpening a specific skillset, be it creative, analytics, project management, or whatever else—you’ll have a much easier time finding the jobs and money you’re after."

My take: No matter the profession, the world is changing fast - just look at AI. We all need to continuously refine our skills and think beyond the horizon. Personally, I'm focusing on conversion copywriting. Words sell and sales ain't going anywhere! What about you? What skill are you planning to refine this year?

More influencer deals will require Instagram Collabs.

"Brands want more organic video content, and they’re already paying influencers to hit the same tone & product. Instagram’s post collab feature is an easy way to tie the influencers directly to the brand while covering that day’s social post."

My take: The idea of collaborating with others to tap into new audiences is beyond smart. Consider creative ways to make it work for you. It doesn't have to involve big payouts or complex agreements. Think outside the box and explore potential partners who can bring mutual benefits.

A series of spicy Twitter predictions

"No, Twitter won’t die...
Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino is gone in the next year...
Twitter will officially be renamed Twitter...
Elon Musk will sell Twitter in the next 3 years..."

My take: Oh, my stars! These predictions have got me all fired up. Can you imagine what Twitter will be serving up this time next year? It's a thrill just thinking about it! 🔮🚀

TL;DR

In the world of social media, keep an eye on trends like Threads fading away, live content losing steam, YouTube Shorts gaining prominence, the growing significance of watch time, expanding social budgets.

Amidst these changes, some may fear for their job roles, but remember this: Ignoring these trends is riskier than embracing them. Step boldly into this brave new world, seize the opportunities, and craft a vibrant 2024!

Once upon a time, two MIT students named Brian and Dharmesh were scheming up business ideas over late-night ramen. "I'm so sick of sales calls interrupting my dinner," Brian grumbled through a mouthful of noodles. "There's got to be a better way to get customers." Dharmesh nodded, pushing up his glasses. "What if instead of hassling people, we created stuff they actually wanted? Like articles answering their questions?" Brian's eyes lit up. "And used search engines to help them find it!" A...
